How to Delete Backups on Mac Using the Terminal

Follow the below steps to delete backups on mac in Time Machine.

Step 1. Click on the terminal icon in the Doc or applications folder on your Mac.

Step 2. Once the terminal window is open you would see the command prompt as shown in the image below

Step 3. Type the command ‘sudotmutildisablelocal’ and press enter. This command will delete all the snapshots saved on your mac’s hard disk. This command also disables the internal storage backup.

If you wish to re-enable the local storage, then you can follow the first two steps mentioned above to open the terminal and use the command ‘sudotmutilenablelocal’ and press enter.

How to Delete iPhone backups in Mac

Generally, the iPhone backups are stored through iTunes. Follow the below steps to remove iPhone backups on mac.

Step 1. Open iTunes from your Dock or Applications folder. Clicking on the iTunes Icon in the applications folder shown below will open iTunes.

Step 2. Click on iTunes in the Menu Bar as shown in the image below.

Step 3. Once you have clicked on iTunes, then select Preferences from the drop-down menu.

Step 4. A new window opens once you click on Preferences, then click on the Devices Tab. On clicking on the Devices tab you can see the iPhone backup’s that have been stored on your mac.

Step 5. Once you select the iPhone backup that you want to delete, then the ‘Delete Backup’ icon becomes active. You can now click on the ‘Delete Backup’ icon to remove the backup on mac.
